Pharmacy Technician
The Pharmacy Technician Program at MTI will prepare you for an exciting career as a Pharmacy Technician in a community pharmacy, hospital, internet pharmacy or in a pharmaceutical distribution company.
Our small classes lead to an individualized approach to your success. You will be taught by experienced, highly qualified instructors. Your instructors all still work in the field outside of MTI in order to remain current, and provide you with the most up to date techniques available in the industry.
You will be trained to read and dispense prescriptions, prepare compounds, use pharmacy computer software (Zadall), prepare intravenous admixtures, order pharmaceuticals, maintain inventory and do calculations relating to the pharmacy. You will also learn about pharmacy laws, Pharmacare and medical terms as well as being informed about herbal and other forms of alternative medicines.
This hands on program finishes with a four week practicum in a pharmacy setting, followed by career preparation where we will help you with your resume and assist you to find employment as a Pharmacy Technician. We know our program will work for you as it did for the 93.87% of MTI grads that got employed last year.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 12 or 19 years of age, Entrance Assessment. Successful completion of a criminal record check.
DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS:
Overall Average of 60%. Must pass Pharmacology by 70% and every other course in the program by the minimum required mark of 60%.

The list of approved prescription drugs changes yearly. MTI ensures that its students are taught using the current list from the Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties that is revised on a yearly basis.

Program
The purpose of the Pharmacy Technician diploma program is to prepare graduates to work the as assistants in a pharmacy setting.
Medical Terminology
Medical Terminology covers the broad base for medical terminology, abbreviations and the systems of the body. Students will learn to build medical words using the key components which also include the correct pronunciation and spelling of each term. Students also gain the understanding of proper utilization of terms to describe medical conditions and disease states.
Pharmacology
In this course students will be provided with a framework of knowledge to recognize drug names, drug classes, and to understand drug actions and the rationale for treatment. Focus will also be on drug side effects, allergic reactions and various health issues relating to pharmacology and drugs.
Prescription Transcription
Prescription transcription covers the specialized Latin terminology of prescriptions. Component parts of a prescription including the Mitte and Signata will be deciphered.
Pharmaceutical Calculations
Students will be provided with the pharmaceutical expressions of strengths and dosages calculations for dispensing. Apothecary and metric system of measurement will be reviewed.
Compounding
This course reviews all aspects of compounding prescriptions. The student will prepare various mixtures, creams and ointments, solutions and suspensions. Emphasis is placed on accuracy and preparation of a pharmaceutical elegant product.
Computer Applications
This course will familiarize the student with the Zadal software program. The course covers the topics of prescription filling, drug interaction, third party medical plans and the PharmaNet system.
Herbal Remedies
Herbal remedies covers the recent popularity of herbal alternatives to drug therapy and their contraindications with prescription drug therapy. Student will learn the recommended herbs for specific health conditions.
Hospital Aseptic Techniques
Hospital aseptic techniques provides students the opportunity to learn the terms and procedures specific to a hospital pharmacy. The course will focus on the preparation of sterile products, and infection control. Procedures covered include sterilization methods, equipment use and maintenance, as well as the handling of biohazard materials.
Customer Service
Students will learn about the critical first impression. Focus will be on professional appearance, presentation techniques, interpersonal skills and effective communication. Students will participate in role playing exercises. Students will complete first aid and WHIMIS training.
Practicum
An on-site practicum provides the students with the opportunity to apply the theoretical skills learned in the classroom. The practicum offers the student experience and allows them to perform appropriate care to their assigned residents.
Career & Professional Development
This course focuses on preparing our future graduates in the job search and interview process. Students will develop a resume, a cover letter, and interview skills.
